Whitehorse Daily Star: Let the lottery begin

More about Food Vendors in downtown.

Stephanie Waddell.
Let the lottery begin…. All but two local food vendors vying for a public space will be entered into a lottery for their summer spots. That ensued after city council passed a lease, encroachment and property use policy Monday night.  The policy will govern vendors setting up shop in the city after a number of mobile food operations opened up for the summer in recent years. The policy will see the city produce a map detailing the public spaces available for vendors. The city will host a lottery draw to determine where vendors will be located.......click on the logo to read article

Burgers, hot dogs and burritos – oh my!
Summer eating options may be better known in the coming weeks as city council considers policy and bylaw changes around mobile food vendors.  At Monday evening’s council meeting, bylaw services manager Dave Pruden was the first to bring forward changes that would open up two spots for vendors in the city parking lot between Main and Steele Streets.....click on the picture to read article..

It’s tough being the new kid on the block. Weeks after granting him a permit, city officials have told Whitehorse’s newest food vendor to get his classic 1974 Winnebago off of city streets.

L'Aurore Boreale: Garlic A GoGo Ne Tourne Plus Round

Food Trucks Downtown threatened!

Hello Garlic a GoGo supporter. Thank you for your support and adding us to your liked list. We have no doubt it is the quality and taste of the food, the friendly service and the variety  and/or change from the usual that caused you to support us. Unfortunately there have been a few complaints against our Food Truck.. Not from the public, but from other restaurants in town. As a rule we have stayed away from parking in front of restaurants for that specific reason and if we had anyone come to us, we made certain that we did  not park there again. We believe in being good business neighbours. Yet they still complained about us.
What does this mean? Well the City doesn’t license competition, but they do have to react when there are complaints, as well they will react when there is support. In fact support will help them quell the so called “squeaky wheels”.

I ask that you send a note to the City Planning Department and let them know that you support us and Food Trucks and Food Carts in the City. My request is for the immediate support and in the long term perhaps suggest that 3rd Street become a designated Food Truck/Cart Area. It will invigorate the City, offer variety as well as “flavour” to the City and enhance the City’s tourism profile. I don’t have to tell you how many tourist got all exited when they saw a Food Truck, it reminded them of home or of the shows they see on TV. Same reaction of course from locals.

The City Planners do support my efforts and business, and if they receive more support then complaints, especially from the public, then they will look at solutions to allow Food Trucks to continue, or else we will end up relegated to dusty vacant lots far from the downtown core and fade away. Then it will be back to the old options of  corporate fast food and the same old same old.

Thanks again for your support, I have included the email addresses/tel# of Pat Ross or Alex Kondor with the City Planning. If you do send an email to them  please cc me at garlicbreath@garlicagogo.ca.

Sincerely

Louis R Gagnon

Support Food Trucks in Whitehorse!

We've had some negative complaints about us. We've been good neighbours, stay away from other restaurants, especially those who make "similar", as in sandwiches for lunch. But then again: NO ONE makes a shawarma in this town! But there's always someone who looks for something/someone to blame why their business isn't working, instead of looking inwards.

We beleive that Gourmet Food Trucks don't compete with traditional restaurants, the so called "brick and mortar", instead we enhance the City's profile, give more choices to people and actually get people out and about, which means more traffic for surrounding businesses. In fact in major cities in Canada, the USA and in Europe, restaurants are getting into the Food Trucks as well. Vij's in Vancouver, an award winning Vegetarian restaurant of world renown has started his own Food Truck!

Hey if you support Food Trucks and support us at Garlic a GoGo (and of course live in Whitehorse.). The City Developers have been our biggest supporters and positive feedback will be great in ensuring that we don't end up stuck in a lot somewhere!.
Call or email the City Development folks and let them know you support us. Pat.ross@whitehorse.ca/ 668-8339 or Alex.Kondor@whitehorse.ca/668-8334
